Encouraging underground talent
Salman and Brian started music in a garage band called Eclipse while still in
High School in Tappan, New York. Ali was in many such bands inLahore, the most
famous of which was the Jupiters. When Salman moved to Pakistan he was in
several underground bands, like the Doctor’s League (all King Edward Medical
College students), and Eastern Winds. It was in these bands that he developed a
reputation for being the hottest guitarist in Lahore and Islamabad. That’s when
the Vital Signs heard of him and asked him to join.
Junoon also started its career as an underground band. Although Salman was
already famous for being a part of the Vital Signs, rock music did not have more
than a cult following in Pakistan, and there were no other rock bands in the
mainstream music scene. But because Junoon believed in rock music and the fact
that it COULD be huge in the country, and of course the fact that they loved to
perform live, which was still a novelty (and maybe still is to some degree!) in
the country, they impressed the masses of the head-banging power of rock music,
one concert at a time!
Junoon’s message to underground talent and to all aspiring musicians is to love
what you do, be prepared to play LOTS of concerts, and forget about fame and
money. If you are a musician to get rich and famous, there’s no such guarantee
here, and you probably have a better chance becoming an investment banker, actor
or model! But if you sincerely love your art, and would be happy just making a
living (that too barely sometimes!) through music, then give it your best shot,
and sincerity does win in the end!
