Review of Junoon's Deewar

Junoon is back with their all-new album, DEWAAR. After a whole lot of rumors about the splitting of the band, they have proved that the junoon will never wear-out. The album stands to be their tenth one and really shows that the band has worked a lot.

The album kicks-off with my favorite song TAARA JALA. The song also happens to be the longest song of the album. The song is very well composed and the lyrics by sabir zafar are really worth to be given a thought, besides, Ali looks as good as ever with his vocals which when carefully listened to sound really moving. The following song is PAPPU YAR, very funky and really cute. The song clears up the oh-junoon-is-splitting-up misconception and tells the new bands that are copying junoon, to stay away from junoon and not to mess with them.

GHOOM TAANA follows which is extremely well composed and also features Ali Noor but still Azmat’s vocals stand out not only because of his now-well-groomed-voice, but also because he knows how and where to stretch out the lines. The title song DEWAAR is rather a little bit disappointing; due to the basic tune of the song being very dull but yes, the drums and Ali’s vocals cover it up. MAZA ZINDAGI KA follows which is a nicely sung energetic song. The song isn’t new but was released quite a lot of time before. How many of junoonis remember Nusrat Husain and his evergreen song KHWAB??

Well, I know, most of them. The following song is KHWAB 2003, which I am feeling sorry to say would appear to be a nightmare for majority of junoonis. Salman tries his luck on this song but fails in the follow-up of the tune as well as the beautifully written lyrics. The song would have been a thousand times better if Ali would have been up to it but we can’t help it. GARAJ BARAS makes one feel really better after KHWAB. The roaring guitar riffs and exceptional voice of Ali really make the song worth listening to and then there are Sabir Zafar’s lyrics to top it off. The song is a typically junoon song and was also released quite a time before.

BAARISH is next on tape. This song also is saved by Ali’s singing capabilities. The lyrics and music are just okay. In HUNGAMA, Salman again tries to sing and sounds definitely better than khwab, the lyrics by Ghalib are well set on the tune. Another lifesaving song appears called SAPNE. The song is moderately fast and can be easily badged as a slow junoon song. The lyrics are well jotted and Ali sounds really refreshing with this song. JHULLE LAL follows which starts with fast drums and music and looks good with the same pace continuing throughout the song. The album winds-up with BALAMA and yes, Salman again gets to sing this song so no more comments about this song.

Although I am a VERY big junooni but I am not really impressed with their work this time except TAARA JALA, GHOOM TAANA, PAPPU YAR GARAJ BARAS and SAPNE. But, still the album is going to be sold like hot cakes since it comes at a time when no one was expecting junoon to return so yes, it will also make it to the top like all other junoon albums. A small piece of advice to Salman that everyone would like to give to him after listening to this album would be to stick to his guitars; he’s really good at it. Ali has a phenomenal, God gifted voice and Sabir Zafar is an experienced lyricist. Let everyone do their jobs and please……..stop covering up Brian, he is a part of junoon. Ali’s solo album would be out soon and would definitely smash records. Possibly, Salman is also planning about some stuff of that kind.

One junooni (like me) needs a very big heart to say anything to their songs but seriously, Salman has destroyed most of the songs with his bad voice and lyrics that just don’t make sense. Why doesn’t he understand that his voice has yet to be groomed? That is a very big question and I wonder who is going to answer that. Things fell a little out of the right places this time. The album looks as if been created in a lot of chaos and I really hope junoon is not coming to the point of losing its charm, diversity and their passion, which has driven them to this point when we (or at least I) cannot even think about junoon producing bad music and I, calling bad names to junoon’s songs (now, what I just did was constructive criticism, we are allowed to that aren’t we?)

All said and done, the album still brought a very pleasant change with all strange and immature kind of music produced nowadays and all junoonis hope to get more and more of excellent music from junoon.
