Pappus Strike Back
The controversy behind Junoon's latest album Deewar
Junoon is back (with a bang?). Well. ..with a new look at least. A colorful new
video and a head shaven Azmat are not the only talk-abouts these days, the
circumstances surrounding the release of their album are also the topic of
discussions. There was a time when no one looked hither-ways before pointing
towards Junoon's album sparkling in the shelves. Now the shelves have a display
of tough choices on them. With the emergence of"Noori," "[ eP]," "Aaroh, " and a
host of other rock bands making the music scene go round, Junoon's new album is
being viewed very critically by the defecting Junoonis. It was perhaps this wave
of new bands that caused Junoon to scratch their heads before throwing a regular
"Sufi” album in the market. Junoon has thus changed their outlook with a new
type of video, music and lyrics. However, Junoon's "Deewar" might not prove to
be Pink Floyd's "The Wall" considering the caution with which it is being
commented upon. The fore runner of the new album, the song "Pappu yaar"is, as
SalmanAhmad puts it, a “lay off" message to the copy cat bands trying to imitate
Junoon's music for their advantage. But SalmanAhmad probably underestimated the
intelligence of the formidable "Pappus." They are shouting "Booo" at the song.
Fact is that this song has a guitar riffstolen from Jimi Hendrix's song "Who
Knows". Was this riff a real rip off or just an inspiration, who knows! The
guitar riff behind the chorus in their song "Taara Jala" is being regarded as a
copy of Bryan Adam's song "Here I am." This is not the first time Salman's
originality is being questioned. Previously, "Yaar Bina " was labeled as a rip
off from Led Zeppelin's song "Gallows pole" (ouch!) and "Sajna", a copy of the
song "Rest in peace" by "Extreme." So the Pappus hav turned the fingers around
and are shouting "Copy cat!" A perfect "you-hit-me-I-hit-you" scenario.
Okay "Pappus," agreed that you have a reason to speak nasty. But guys, hold your
horses for a moment and look who you are messing with. It's Junoon, the band you
banged your heads to in college remember? The band that gave you "Heer” which
you were so eager to learn when you got your first real six string! And believe
me, Junoon is much more sounder to be hurt by this rhetoric of yours. It remains
the only internationally recognized band of the country. With a repute like
that,it will surely last for a long time, even if all they do is copy-paste
music! So my personal recommendation to the readers: do listen to Deewar...even
if they call it just another brick in the wall!
And as for Junoon. ..please take "Pappus" seriously! .
